We don’t hold you hostage!

In the web development industry it has been a very common practice to design and develop websites for customers and host those websites on the developers server. There are some dangers to that traditional model and some benefits it all depends on the type of customer and how much control they really want.

Senario 1.

Customer hires me to design and develop a website and I move their domain name to my server under my business name legally and all of the files are controlled by me. My developer suddenly dies or we have a falling out and don’t wish to work together anymore.

I call this the trapped situation, the customer now feels awkward in approaching the developer or partners about having everything moved. More than often the developer has stranded the customer and now the are trapped. The customer doesn’t have the domain name in their control or the files and are at the mercy of the developer. Often the customer has to rent hosting space from the developer for typically $30-$75 a month. The developer isn’t doing anything for this service normally, they are just renting space. Whey rent that from the developer when you can get it yourself for $9-$20 a month.

Senario 2.

The customer hires the web developer to design and build a website, but instead of the developer hosting the website YOU the customer hosting it. You save hundreds of dollars per year on the hosting fees and then you have complete control over the domain name and the files. The account is under your company name and you can assign access to the developer at will. If the relationship fails for whatever reason YOU ARE NOT TRAPPED! All you have to do is find another developer and hire them to take over managing it for you.

FACTACT will not hold you hostage! As a business coach, I know one of the most important aspects of a marketing plan is a website. A quality website — well designed and well positioned for Search Engines — will increase your business. Is there any doubt about it? So you need a website, now what? It seems these days there are web designers by the dozen. Who do you choose?
